Sahariel
The graveyards invisible spirit
Sahariel is a lonely spirit of a Rune Dragon from the world of Eldemore. In the past he's been abused and bullied by humans and Runes alike, which has made him very insecure about himself and rather scared of the world around. This is something he has been working to deal with since Missouri became his Rune bearer and he's dreaming to someday feel whole again.

Home is where the heart belongs; the graveyard is what he called home.
(Chapter One)
Everything has its downsides, especially life. Each and every one of us may end up having something that we refer to as “hell”. Others can let you down or treat you like air; some end up being the one others bully. The kind of hell each one has can be anything, depending on who you are. Some of those living in their very own hell might not even know why it happened or why they were chosen to be in that everlasting hell.
Sahariel was one of those who didn’t know the reason to why he was treated like air by other Runes and was bullied by humans. He thought during his entire life that he was like everyone else; that he was no different from anyone other than his sub species of the Runes. His life circled around the thoughts about being accepted, about being loved for who he was. By watching others who had everything he wished for, his longing to obtain it too grow stronger and stronger by each passing day. Somehow the gods didn’t wish to fulfil his wishes and dreams; each and every time he tried to become friends with someone they turned away to be friends with someone else instead.
Loneliness kills and Sahariel’s life ended so much earlier than what it should have. He was alone until the very end and no one noticed when he was gone. Well, surely the humans who bullied him noticed, but none of the Runes he grew up along side with noticed. After all, to those Runes he didn’t exist at all from the very beginning.
Death frees you from everything; all your pain and suffering in this life will go away when you’re no longer alive.
That’s at least what some may end up telling you in life and what some believe is true, but it’s only a lie to those living lives similar to what Sahariel lived. The pain didn’t go away even when his mortal life ended; it continued even after that. As did his longing for belonging and being accepted for who he was; he still wished for it and he will never let go of the thought of being able to feel the feeling we all call “love”. His quest to be seen, be heard, and find someone’s friendship continued because he didn’t feel complete. There was an emptiness inside of him and he had almost lost sight of who he once was. But then again, had he even been someone to begin with?
We fear the unknown because we don’t know what it has in store for any of us. If something we cannot explain happens we cannot help but to have that uneasy feeling within our mind; even if it’s not all that large, it’s still there. We fear what we cannot see but know is there. We fear strange things that we see but cannot explain. We fear things that shouldn’t happen because it's impossible and has no explanation to it.
Sahariel wasn’t mean in his life and he never even thought about doing something that could end up hurting someone. He was a kind Rune and he treated others just like he wished to be treated one day; as equals. Even after his death he continued like that while he waited for someone that would call him “friend” and help him feel the feeling called “love” for the first time in his life.
He was bound to the old graveyard after his death; because it was close to where he grew up and it had always been the only place that he called “home”. At first Sahariel was unaware of the fact that he was dead; he only noticed that he no longer could speak. Instead of using words he decided to send his feelings to others in order to communicate with them. Mostly those around him did not understand that and was too frightened to come close to the graveyard.
To get someone’s attention while they passed by he would move objects or throw small pebbles at them. Surely he got attention alright, but it was the wrong kind of attention; instead of making someone stay it made them flee from the graveyard. He tried to be seen just like when he was alive, but yet again it scared others by seeing a ghost who sometimes vanished right in front of them.
Sahariel did indeed not intend to frighten anyone; he simply did the only things he could do in order to find what he did not have while he was alive. One could say that it all was just a big misunderstanding and it made him truly sad that he scared others when he meant no harm at all.
He kept waiting; year after year, decade after decade. He kept trying to make someone understand him. Each and every time the one he tried to make contact with showed signs of fear he simply backed away, ashamed of what he had done. Saddened by the thought of never obtaining that which he longed for now more than ever; almost loosing his hope of ever get to know someone.
Each and every life has its downsides, each and every thing that occurs has its downside, and each and every living creature has its downsides. Those are the downsides that some of us end up referring to as “hell”. Some can make it through them, while others cannot and are trapped with their regrets and pain for an eternity. Sahariel stayed in the graveyard, because he knew no where else to go. And he kept waiting for a better day to come.
“Just wait and see, it might be better tomorrow. If not tomorrow, maybe the day after that …”

Personality
Kindhearted | Insecure | Enduring | Careful | Lonely
Sahariel is a very kind lad. He would never do something that would be deemed as “bad”, “evil” or that may end up hurting someone. It’s like that he has been since the time so long ago when he was still alive and it continued even after his death. Still hoping and still wishing that someone one day could show their kindness towards him just like he has been trying to do for longer than what he can remember. Friendly is something he always has been, he could never see himself being unkind or mean to anyone. Therefore he has always treated others as friendly as possible; just the way he one day wishes to be treated like too. He believed that others might end up treating him like that one day as long as he kept treating them with kindness.
Due to that the other Runes who lived and grew up in the same little village ignored him and simply treated him as if he was invisible, he ended up becoming shy and quiet as time passed by. He didn’t speak very often; it was almost so bad that he even didn’t know the sound of his own voice. Surely he tried to speak as often he could in the beginning, but in due time he became more silent after each and every day that passed by. Sahariel didn’t dare to do too much nor speak “out of terms” while he was alive; he simply was too afraid. He feared that the ignorance and he being invisible would turn into bullying; just like the humans bullied him.
It’s not Sahariel speaking when he’s described as “different”, because he never wanted to accept that those around him deemed him as that. He doesn’t know why the other Runes deemed him as different and chose him to be the invisible Rune of Eldemore. There was nothing that he could come up with that he thought would be any different from them. But there’s one thing even they forgot; being different isn’t something bad. Different is just another way to say that someone is special. However, that’s one things that even Sahariel forgot about.
At some point after many years in life he started to loose his hope to one day be accepted just like everyone else around him were. All the suffering he had been put through by being partly invisible, even though he was alive, and partly being bullied had taken its toll on him.
Sahariel endured most things during his life by always thinking and putting all his faith in the one sentence;
“Just wait and see, it might be better tomorrow. If not tomorrow, maybe the day after that …”
That’s what he thought each and every time he noticed that there were no difference in the way he was treated by the other Runes. That’s what he thought each and every time he ran into the humans who always started bullying him as soon as they saw him. That’s what he thought each and every evening before he was about to enter another restless sleep. That’s what he thought each and every day until neither his heart nor soul could bare it any longer and his heart stopped beating.
He managed to endure the pain quite well in his mortal life, but even that didn’t spare him from his all too early death. He kept enduring the pain even as a ghost who wandered over the graveyard that he called “home” due to that his life came to its end there. The only difference now is that his heart can no longer stop beating and he had to endure the pain for what may seem like an eternity.
Emptiness, that’s one thing that started to be a good way to describe him after his immortal life had started. As days passed by he lost one thing that once had been a part of who he was when he was alive; slowly turning him into an empty shell who didn’t know who he once was or who he is now. He became nothing and no one. The only things that remained within his empty shell was his longing for belonging, his longing to be seen, his longing to be accepted and his longing to feel everything that he never had the chance to feel when he was alive. A longing to finally be a real person.
Even after meeting Missouri, who in turn allowed him to meet Nagazdiel and Nilaihah, he hasn't yet come to terms with who he is. He is insecure in himself and is often just observing and going along with everything that happens around him. A part of him fears that if he becomes "too much" and turns into someone other than the empty shell they all first got to know; he will end up loosing them. This might just be foolish thoughts he has, but he can’t help but to be scared of it and fear that he just might have to go back to the graveyard and await someone new.
Sahariel has however begun to open up more to others and has even started to interact more with those around him. Still, he’s very careful about doing so and tends to only do it whenever Nagaz or Nilaihah are around - just to be certain that he doesn’t do anything wrong. Unfortunately his lack of experience with how to behave around others and what one not should say, he doesn’t know how to handle being with others and will often act rather odd early on. He’s very ashamed of it but he can’t do much about it since he never had much of a chance to learn those things while he was alive. So making new friends is overall something he will stay away from trying to accomplish, he’s still much too scared to be the one to take the first step in doing so. If someone else is the one to start trying to be friends with him, he will however try to open up a little to them in case he likes them.
Since Missouri is a traveller and often is on journeys around the lands of Eldemore, he will accompany her at all times. She is his Rune bearer after all and she’s the one person in the entire world that he cares more about than what he cares about anyone else. Sadly enough he has always had a hard time with these journeys, Missouri is such a strait forward person and talks to many people as well as creatures during these journeys that he hasn’t been able just yet to adjust to liking it. Surely he likes to see new places around the world, but he’s still very shy around those he doesn’t know very well. Not to mention that jealousy often grips hold of his being and he cannot help but to sometimes feel that Missouri doesn't care about him as much as he cares about her. Surely he knows that he might be a fool for feeling like that, but he can't really help it since he has such a small amount of people he trusts. He doesn't wish to be left all alone again, he fears to be forgotten once again.

The future and the past views
All that has been cannot be changed, no matter how much one would want it to. He tries everyday not to think about the past and to leave the past in the past. He may not like his past, nor would he want to go back to it ever again. But in one way he's happy about how he was treated and he ended up dying and turning into a Lost Phantom Rune after his death. For if he hadn't, he wouldn't have found his future and he wouldn't have ever met Missouri.
Now all he wants is to spend his days with her and those that the two of them holds dear. He sees every day much brighter even if he may have days that brings back bad memories from the past. Though, he doesn't dare to plan or hope for too much. He prefers taking each days as it comes and see what it may bring.

Philosophy on life and death
As Sahariel already passed away he doesn't give much thought to neither life nor death. He truly doesn't see himself as "alive", since he will never die or pass on again. He's probably more of an immortal and will be around long after that those he loves has passed onto the next. This is something he fears though, to someday loose everything he now has only to start over again. The curse of being immortal has its price.
Quirks
♦ Sahariel can often be found either sleeping or simply sitting "inside" tombstones with only his head, tail, wings and paws outside it. For some reason he finds it very comfortable and he can't really say exactly why.
♦ Playing with spiders and worms or maggots, they have always been the only living beings that always will accept him and thus he loves them dearly and will often play around with them (most likely he might get on the wrong foot with them since he tends to like things that they don't. For example he finds it rather enjoyable to pick up cobweb around his tail and make the spider who lives in it hang in its thin thread from it).
♦ Whenever it's winter he will often try to let as many snowflakes as possible fly through him while it snows, and he also enjoys walking in deep snow invisible, making his paws leave his footprints behind. At those times he's usually trying to imagine how it would look like if he saw it and he has always been thinking that he'd find such a sight quite interesting. Lastly, regarding the snow and winter. Sahariel tends to enjoy icicles and will often just pass through them in order to feel their coldness for a short moment. At times he will even take them down from wherever they're hanging and fall asleep with a couple of them that he lines up like a nest in the snow.

Deeper knowledge about Sahariel
Darkest Secret ...
At some point while he was still alive, during the days when things felt the hardest and most hurtful. He would often question his existence and why he was a part of Eldemore if no one even wanted him to be there. At those times he would often consider helping those who wished for him to cease to be ... And he was seriously considering to end his life once and for all. Though, he never had the "courage" to do it in the end, thus he kept on suffering at their hands and he kept on hoping for a better day to come ... Until that fateful day when his sore heart could take no more.

Most treasured memory ...
The day when the song could be heard through the forest around the old graveyard. The melody that caught his attention from his everyday life that seemed meaningless as a ghost. The melody that left the throat of a girl he came to love more than anyone else in the world. The day he met Missouri for the first time and the moment he was saved from his lonely life in the old graveyard.

Good habits
He will question to both himself and those around him if a certain thing is good to do or not, just so nothing bad will happen afterwards. Especially if it is something he never has done before. Safety before chance. Talents/skills/strenghts He has a keen eye for details and will often see things that others miss. Perhaps it is because he can pass through objects. So he can often find his way back if he and Missouri ever get lost somewhere, as an example. Hopes and dreams To live a fulfilling life with the ones he's finally found that cares for him and that he too cares about. Best quality His kindness and caring aura, you must look long and far to find someone who is his equal in that matter. What he wants To overcome his weaknesses and gain more confidence in himself. Sahariel sees himself as ... Kind, responsible and obedient, and scared. Most valued possession A small pendant with a tiny crystal on top of the locket, the one that Missouri gave him for his first birthday that he ever celebrated in his life. Which he now also has put some cobweb in. Most proud accomplishment Nagazdiel sometimes runs off to explore shipwrecks and caves deep below the surface. Sometimes he's gone for a long while before he comes back. Often neither Nath'aniel nor Missouri will worry too much if he's gone for a day or two. But when those days turns into almost a week, worry slowly comes around. Seeing both of them worry so, Sahariel went out to look for their friend. Being a ghost in no need to breathe, he had no hard time searching in the depths even though it scared him. Sending out his voice as feelings around him, searching for Nagaz. Soon enough he heard a cry deep down in a cave that had given in. It was Nagaz voice. He moved through the stone and found his friend that rarely ever cries at a cliff above the water surface inside that cave which was half-filled with water. Quickly he went back home to find someone who could move the stones away and free Nagaz. Nath'aniel dived down and was able to get the stones out of the way, thus Nagaz was finally free. He is motivated by ... The smiles of those he cares about, he wishes for them to always be happy and will do what little he can to make sure they always smile and are happy. |
Bad habits
Sleeping up-side-down like a bat every once in a while, it usually makes him sneeze a lot, but he still keeps doing it since he finds it comfortable. Though, he still finds sleeping inside tombstones the best way to sleep. Weaknesses/clumsiness Thunderstorms, he is so scared of them that he's never been able to overcome it. He always starts shaking and hides when one comes around. And also being caught too often in thoughts of his greatest fears - even though he does not wish to think about it. The thoughts comes to him like ghosts anyway. He also tends to stumble upon his own feet when he walks every now and then. Fears and nightmares To be alone for all eternity. And fears the day everyone he loves will have passed on and he will be left alone again, loosing all he holds dear. For that day will surely come one day even if he doesn't want it to. Greatest flaw He's very easily hurt and it doesn't take much to get his mood down to the bottom of the bottle. So one has to be careful choosing the right words around him and thoughtful of the fact that he may not see a mean joke as a joke - but truth. What he doesn't want For others to suffer the same way he did in his youth. Others see Sahariel as ... Insecure, sometimes too kind for his own good and lacking in his confidence. "He needs to toughen up" - Nilaihah would say. Greatest failure He's very bad at judging the intentions of others and has always had a hard time reading what kind of person those he meets are. Thus it happens every so often that those who realize this flaw of his, will end up taking advantage of it. One of those times was during a trip to the coast with Missouri. She had entrusted him with watching over their luggage when she went to the shop to get some last supplies. A stranger came forward and said he could help them getting their belonging onto the ship. At first Sahariel had hesitated to let the man do it, and in this hesitation the man saw his chance to steal one of the bags. When Missouri returned she found Sahariel crying on the ground, for he had in the last minute tried to stop the man when he realized that the man was no good. But being a small Rune he stood no chance against the man. Of course, Missouri got more scared if Sahariel got hurt or not than to care for the stolen bag. Still, Sahariel got very depressed over the incident and it added on to him having an even harder time to start trusting others. Especially strangers. |
